Why is my 5-digit ZIP code not adequate to determine my representatives?
5-digit ZIP codes correspond with local postal delivery areas. These areas can be quite large and have no relationship with things such as county boundaries. While some local delivery areas do fall entirely within single districts, many are split by legislative and congressional district lines. With a four-digit ZIP code extension, the area represented is narrowed down to one side of a street between intersecting streets. This is usually adequate for determining district assignments and representation.
