A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT TO ESTABLISH TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY IN MAY.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  Chapter 103 of the General Statutes is amended by adding a new section to read:

"§ 103‑15.  Teacher Appreciation Day.

The first Tuesday of the first full week in May of each year is designated as Teacher Appreciation Day in North Carolina."

SECTION 2.  G.S. 115C‑12 is amended by adding a new subdivision to read:

"§ 115C‑12.  Powers and duties of the Board generally.

The general supervision and administration of the free public school system shall be vested in the State Board of Education. The State Board of Education shall establish policy for the system of free public schools, subject to laws enacted by the General Assembly. The powers and duties of the State Board of Education are defined as follows:

(33a) Duty to Develop Recommended Programs for Teacher Appreciation Day. – The State Board of Education shall develop recommended programs that enable students, parents, guardians, and administrators to show appreciation for teachers. All schools are encouraged to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Day.

…."

SECTION 3.  This act is effective when it becomes law and applies beginning with the 2017‑2018 school year.
