A HOUSE RESOLUTION honoring the memory of dorothy post hoover, former wasp and author.

Whereas, in an effort to address the need for male combat pilots during World War II, the United States Military began the Women Airforce Service Pilots program, known as WASP; and

Whereas, of the 24,000 women who applied for the program, only 1,830 were accepted and only 1,075 successfully completed the flight training; and

Whereas, WASPs were assigned to Army bases throughout the United States and were given duties such as being test pilots or instructors, towing targets for air‑to‑air gunnery practice and ground‑to‑air anti‑aircraft practice, transporting personnel and cargo, and ferrying planes from base to base; and

Whereas, Dorothy Post Hoover of Henderson County, who received a pilot's license as a teenager, was one of the successful WASP candidates; and

Whereas, Dorothy Post Hoover spent much of her service during the war in Texas, where her assignments included towing gun targets for aerial gunnery practice and serving as a basic flying instructor; and

Whereas, after the war, Dorothy Post Hoover returned to North Carolina, where she had a successful career as a court reporter in Buncombe County; and

Whereas, after retiring, Dorothy Post Hoover wrote numerous books on subjects ranging from fictional adventures and mysteries to highly researched theological commentaries; and

Whereas, Dorothy Post Hoover was a founding member of All Saints Anglican Church in Mills River but, in her later years, returned to her former church, St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Asheville; and

Whereas, Dorothy Post Hoover was honored as one of the WASPs featured in a special DVD, "Fly Girls of World War II," produced by retired National Geographic photographer Tom Nebbia for the WASP Reunion held in Texas in 2000; and

Whereas, Dorothy Post Hoover died on March 15, 2015, at the age of 98; Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

SECTION 1.  The House of Representatives honors the memory of Dorothy Post Hoover, a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots, and expresses its gratitude for her service to this nation during World War II as one of the first women to fly American military aircraft.

SECTION 2.  The Principal Clerk shall transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the family of Dorothy Post Hoover.

SECTION 3.  This resolution is effective upon adoption.
