A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT to remove the maximum value restrictions for prizes in raffles conducted by nonprofit organizations.

Whereas, the value of prizes that may be raffled by nonprofit organizations is currently limited to $125,000 cash, a value of $125,000 in merchandise, or a value of $500,000 in real property; and

Whereas, many nonprofit organizations receive donations of items such as antique motor vehicles, art, and real estate, the value of which exceed the raffle prize limitations; and

Whereas, the ability to conduct a raffle of higher value exceptional items could provide needed funds to good causes supported by nonprofit organizations; Now, therefore,

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  Subsections (d) and (g) of G.S. 14‑309.15 are repealed.

SECTION 2.  This act becomes effective May 1, 2015, and applies to offenses committed on or after that date.
