A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT to provide for safer communities by authorizing a person or entity employing or contracting with a company police agency to enter into joint agreements with municipalities and counties to extend the law enforcement authority of company police officers.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  G.S. 74E‑6 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:

"(c1)     Additional Authority. – In addition to the powers contained in subsection (c) of this section, the person or entity that employs or contracts with a company police agency may do the following:

(1)        Enter into joint agreements with the governing board of any municipality to extend the law enforcement authority of company police officers into any or all of the municipality's jurisdiction and to determine the circumstances in which this extension of authority may be granted.

(2)        Enter into joint agreements with the governing board of any county, with the consent of the sheriff, to extend the law enforcement authority of company police officers into any or all of the county's jurisdiction and to determine the circumstances in which this extension of authority may be granted."

SECTION 2.  This act is effective when it becomes law.
