A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT to modify the duties of the State advisory council on indian education.
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:
SECTION 1. G.S. 115C-210.4 reads as rewritten:
"§ 115C-210.4. Duties of the Council.
It shall be the duty of the Advisory Council:
(1) To advise the
State Board of Education on ways to meet more effectively the educational needs
of Indian students;To review annually relevant data on Indian students
using reports made available to the Council by the Department of Public
Instruction. The review shall include, but not be limited to, data on academic
performance, growth, suspension and expulsion events, dropouts, and graduation
rates.
(2a) To advise the State Board of Education in an annual presentation on ways to meet the educational needs of Indian students more effectively.
(2) To advocate for
meaningful programs to reduce and eventually eliminate low achievement and
concurrent high attrition rates among American Indian students;students.
(3) To
prepare an annual report on a fiscal year basis on the status of Indian
education, said report to be presented to the State Board of Education and to
the various Indian tribal organizations at the statewide Indian Unity
Conference;
(4) To work closely
with the Division of Indian Education in the Department of Public
Instruction to improve coordination and communication between and among programs;programs.
(5) To advise the State Board of Education on any other aspect of Indian education when requested by the State Board to do so."
SECTION 2. This act is effective when it becomes law.
