A JOINT RESOLUTION expressing sorrow to the Governor of Michigan and the members of the michigan legislature for the victory of appalachian state university over the University of michigan.

Whereas, on September 1, 2007, the Appalachian State University Mountaineers the University of Michigan Wolverines by a score of 34 to 32; and

Whereas, the Mountaineers secured a place in college football history by becoming the first Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) team to beat a Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) team that was ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll; and

Whereas, prior to the Mountaineers' stunning victory over the Wolverines, Michigan was ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and was mentioned as a possible contender for the national championship; and

Whereas, the Mountaineers had a chance to run up the score near the end of the game but opted for a field goal; and

Whereas, the Mountaineers' triumph over the Wolverines influenced the Associated Press to change its 71-year-old policy to allow all Division I teams to be eligible for its Top 25 Poll; and

Whereas, the two-time national championship Mountaineers have an exceptional football program and currently lead the nation with the longest winning streak of 16 consecutive games; and

Whereas, the members of ASU's football team along with Coach Jerry Moore and his entire staff deserve recognition for bringing great honor and distinction to the State of North Carolina; Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

SECTION 1.  The General Assembly of North Carolina expresses its deepest sorrow to the Governor of Michigan and the members of the Michigan Legislature for the victory of Appalachian State University's football team over the University of Michigan on September 1, 2007.

SECTION 2.  The Secretary of State shall transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the Governor of Michigan, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Michigan Legislature, President Pro Tempore of the Senate of the Michigan Legislature, Coach Jerry Moore, and the Athletic Director of Appalachian State University.

SECTION 3.  This resolution is effective upon ratification.
